Sterling Silver Star Sapphire Tie Clip by Sarahorsomeone
Sterling Silver Star Sapphire Tie Clip
Star sapphire tie pin I made for my boyfriend to match my own star sapphire pendant (sarahorsomeone.deviantart.com/…) for a wedding we're going to in July.

I didn't make the silver tie clip itself, but bought it second hand for little over scrap value (it was incredibly scratched) before repolishing it by hand and adding the setting and sapphire. The stone is about 9 x 7 mm in size and weighs around 3 carats, it is natural but diffusion treated.

The star is caused by a phenomenon known as asterism and has a kind of holographic 3D effect such that it appears to move depending on where you are in relation to the stone and any light sources. In diffused light the star vanishes altogether and if multiple light sources are present you sometimes get multiple stars appear at once super-imposed on top of one another.

13.15ct Star Sapphire Pendant by Sarahorsomeone
13.15ct Star Sapphire Pendant
This is the latest piece of jewellery I've made and I get to keep it all for myself (it matches a much smaller ring I have)! It was hand-set by me in sterling silver, after which I added the heart shaped bail.

The stone is a big 13.15 carat star sapphire (natural but diffusion treated) my boyfriend bought me; we got it off someone selling off their mineral collection and it was a fantastic bargain for the size of it (it possibly even beats my recycled precious coral necklace for second-hand value - sarahorsomeone.deviantart.com/…). For it's weight it has quite a small 'face-up' size of 11 x 13 mm, but is extremely thick (around 8 mm). It also has 'hidden stripes' - if you shine a bright light through it you can see green and blue growth lines (along with a few inclusions), though these are not visible in normal light.

I've previously made a star sapphire pendant from a synthetic star sapphire (sarahorsomeone.deviantart.com/…), but this is my first time using a 'real' one, much trickier given the rather rough and irregular unpolished underside. The setting also needed quite a bit of re-shaping to fit such a 'fat' stone.

Whoops! Have been AWOL from DeviantArt for months, just very busy with life at the moment. I've actually done a reasonable amount of Artisan Craft work, but not got around to photographing most of it. Anyway, I have broken my absence with a new digital piece: a fencing portrait of my boyfriend! :) (Smile)  (Hmm.. not sure why this font is so big, but I can't work out how to shrink it)
Epee Fencing Lunge by Sarahorsomeone
Epee Fencing Lunge
Portrait of my boyfriend performing a fencing lunge during a lesson with our coach. Drawn in pencil, scanned and then finished in Photoshop CS5.  I used a photo I took myself as a reference.

I did it in a similar style to this portrait of myself, in a chalk and pencil style sarahorsomeone.deviantart.com/…

Hmm... what to put.

I live in the UK with my two pet birds while studying for an undergraduate degree in health sciences. This is possibly helped by my strange ability to remember all kinds of weird Latin anatomical names whilst not being able to remember the name of the person sitting next to me. I'm particularly fascinated by human anatomy, physiology and medical microbiology.

As for the more artistic side of things, when I get the time, I work on everything from traditional art, photography, photo-manipulation and a variety of artisan crafts. Although a fair bit of the work I do is digital, above all things I like to work with my hands; the smaller and fiddlier the better! As you may have guessed, my gallery is quite eclectic in style, medium and subject.

When not studying or doing arty/crafty things I love to fence. Partly because it gives me a legitimate reason to poke people. ^_^
Interests
I haven't been around much recently, I was very busy preparing for exams and then had to have a small operation the week after. I've got some work to do over the summer break but otherwise I'm fairly free so hope to photograph and/or finish a few artisan craft pieces I have in the works. I should have some new things to upload over the next few weeks.

Sarah :-)

I realized I locked my forum thread and hence couldn't reply to your comment there about the "coloured light effect" in my work.

I'll let you in on a little secret... Sometimes I just put a very transparent coloured layer on top of things and keep painting above it. ;) That and applying amusing colour correction effects in my painting software once I'm finished. Sometimes if it ends up looking weird I end up painting some more to adjust it again.

We do have a digital medium at our hands, might as well make the most of it ;D
