Description

I expect DA's compression system will have made this go fuzzy like it does ALL my digital art. Edit: I've resized it myself and saved it as a PNG; seems to have improved the situation a little, though it still looks blurry next to the original.

Self-portrait of myself demonstrating the prime parry* while seated, in the makeshift version of wheelchair fencing we do at my club. I was inspired to draw this after seeing some artwork in the magazine sent to British Fencing members ('The Sword') and after Googling realised I couldn't find any serious non-photography portraits of wheelchair/'sitting down' fencing. I took the reference photograph myself using a tripod and self-timer, then drew the line-art in pencil before scanning it into the computer and finishing it on Photoshop. I tried to go for a chalk and pencil kind of style.

I've deliberately decided not to draw the chair in detail, in part because chairs are boring, but also to visually show how the positions assumed when fencing sitting down are surprisingly similar to when standing. You face each other side-on and all the guard positions are identical (when fencing seated for the first time I've noticed people have a tendency to try and sit facing their opponent with their legs wide apart... a bad idea for several reasons, one of which should be fairly obvious ;-)).

*Possibly badly, I struggle with prime but I thought it looked good in the reference ^_^. I often do the prime parry in my lessons but have never managed to make it work in an actual bout. The perspective is also making the blade look like it's in a more vertical position than in reality (I think it was pointed at about chest height) as my reference shot was taken at a quite a wide-angle, but from an artistic point of view I quite like that.
